"Duffresne". Rivard dit Dufresne, Rivard Lavigne Ladlanderie, Rivard dit Lavigne, and Rivard. They all descend from "Joseph Rivard" of Normandy, France. His descendant "Capt. Nicolas Rivard dit Lavigne" arrived in 1648 to "New France" (Quebec), Canada at the age of 31. He became the Captain of the "Militia of Montreal" after eight years in Montreal, and became (protector/soldier) of the city of Montreal and being paid by the city government. In 1656 he was appointed "Captain" of the Militia at cap-de-la-Madeleine, Quebec, Canada. When he first arrived in 1648 he was employed as a servant for "Noel Juchereau" for a period of 3 years. During his tenue and life in "New France" he was a Churchwarden, Militia Captain, Trustee for the Seigneuy of Bastiscan for more than three decades until his death on July 1, 1701 in Bastiscan. In 1729 he had (224) descendants that was recorded throughout Quebec. On Nov. 6, 1915 one of his descendants "Victor Dufresne" moved from "Windsor Mills", Sherbrooke, Quebec, Canada and arrived in Wolcott, Vermont USA to a farm he had purchased in 1914. In 1924 he sold the farm in Wolcott, and bought another larger farm on what was then known as "French-mans Hill" in Hardwick, Vermont. He would remain there the rest of his life raising 16 children with his wife "Marie Bessette"
